Uttar Pradesh tops the domestic violence chart with 65k cases

The Union government on Tuesday announced that according to a report by the Supreme Court of India, a total of 65,481 cases of domestic violence against girls have been reported in Uttar Pradesh, whereas, Delhi reported only 3,564 instances of marital violence.

The Centre further stated that solicitor general Aishwarya Bhati submitted a report obtained from all the states in front of a bench of Justices S R Bhat, P S Narasimha and U U Lalit that reveal the number of domestic violence cases around the country. Till now, Rajasthan reports 38, 381 instances and Andhra Pradesh lodged 37, 876 cases of domestic violence, putting them in the second and third position on the list.

The other states who reported significantly high number of domestic violence cases are, Kerala (20, 826), Madhya Pradesh (16,384), Maharashtra (16,168), Assam (12,739), Karnataka (11,497), West Bengal (9,858), Punjab (8,215) and Haryana (7,715).

Aishwarya Bhati while giving a general outlook of the execution of DV Act provisions said, “As per info obtained from states and UTs, a complete of two,95,601 complaints/litigations have been registered below PWDV Act, whereas variety of courts to take care of these instances are reported to be 6,289. There are 807 shelter houses and over 700 one cease centres to maintain girls affected by violence and misery.”
