Canada appoints its first anti-Islamophobia advisor on Thursday

On Thursday, Canada created history by appointing the first special representative on combatting, a post created after encountering several attacks on Muslims in Canada. 

A statement came from the Prime minister’s office that stated that Amira Elghawaby, an activist and Journalist, will be the new advisor, Champion, expert, and representative to support and elevate the federal government’s efforts in the unofficial war against Islamophobia, systemic racism, racial discrimination, and religious intolerance.

Amira Elghawaby will be the communications head for the Canadian Race Relations Foundation. Amira will also be the head of the columnist for the Toronto Star newspaper. She previously worked at the public broadcaster CBC for more than 10 years. 

Elghawaby’s appointment was applauded by the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau. He said that it was a significant step towards the against the unsaid battle with Islamophobia and hatred in all possible ways. 

The honorable PM of Canada also mentioned that Canada’s diversity is one of the strong factors. However, for several Muslims, Islamophobia is also a reality. 

The country has faced a series of deadly attacks on the Muslim community in recent years. Size Muslim people died, and five were severely injured in an attack at a Quebec City mosque some years back. 

The newly appointed advisor, Elghawaby, took to Twitter to share the names of the people killed in the recent attacks, with the text, “We must never forget.”

The new role was suggested in June 2021 at the national summit on Islamophobia. The federal government organized the summit after encountering the hike in attacks on Muslims in the country.
